Putnam County Jail Roster

The jail roster of Putnam County, New York, is a public resource that allows citizens to find out who is currently in custody at the county correctional facility. Through PutnamCourt.us, you can find publicly available information about current and recently released inmates. Additionally, data is available on the official Putnam County website, through the sheriff's department by phone, or during a personal visit. The roster is maintained by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, updated regularly, and serves as a transparency tool — anyone can check the custody status of a specific person, view the charges filed, and the date of admission.

Search Current Inmates in Putnam Jail

There are several ways to find out if a person is in custody at the Putnam County Jail.

Online Search

  1. Go to PutnamCourt.us — enter the full legal name or booking number to view publicly available information about court cases and custody.
  2. Use the New York State Commission of Correction's inmate search system, which covers county jails outside New York City.
  3. If the person has already been transferred to a state-level facility, check the Incarcerated Lookup on the DOCCS website — a last name or birth year is sufficient.

By Phone

Call the Sheriff's Office directly. The operator can confirm if a specific person is in custody if you provide the full name and date of birth. Not all charge details are provided by phone — it depends on the institution's internal policy.

Personal Visit

Visit the sheriff's administrative office during business hours. It is advisable to have an identification document with you.

Find Putnam Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person is officially registered at the correctional facility. This is not the same as an arrest warrant or court decision — it is an internal prison document that records the fact of admission.

During processing, the following data set is formed:

  • Unique booking number
  • Date and time of admission
  • List of charges filed
  • Name of the arresting agency (police, sheriff, State Police)
  • Basic identification data of the detainee

In Putnam County, these records are usually available through the jail roster maintained by the Sheriff's Office. If the online roster does not display the required information, there is an option to submit a public records request in accordance with the New York State Freedom of Information Law (FOIL). You can download the application form on the Putnam County Clerk's page — it also describes the procedure for submitting a request.

To check criminal history at the state level, the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) maintains an official criminal record registry. This is a separate process that requires fingerprints and does not replace a search in the jail roster.

Search the Putnam Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The roster supports two main search methods.

By Last Name

Enter the last name in the search field. You can add the first name to narrow down the results. A few tips:

  • Use the official legal name, not a nickname or abbreviation.
  • Check the spelling — even one letter can change the result.
  • If the system supports partial matches, try entering only the first few letters of the last name.
  • Common last names may return dozens of records — add a first name or middle initial.

By Booking Number

If you know the booking number, enter it directly. This is the most accurate method — the number is unique for each admission.

If the Search Yields No Results

The absence of a record does not necessarily mean the person was not detained. Possible reasons:

  1. The person has already been released or transferred to another facility.
  2. The booking is not yet complete, and the data has not been entered into the system.
  3. The name is recorded with a spelling variation.
  4. The person is held at the state level — in this case, check the inmate search on NY.gov.

You can always call the Sheriff's Office at (845) 225-4300 to clarify the custody status.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Putnam

The roster is updated periodically throughout the day, but it is not a real-time system. Several hours may pass between the actual admission of a detainee and the appearance of the record in the online roster. Night arrests, for example, often appear only the next morning.

Main limitations to be aware of:

  • Delay between booking and publication. The registration process includes photographing, fingerprinting, medical examination — all of which take time.
  • Records disappear after release. The roster only displays those currently in custody. After release or transfer, the record is generally deleted.
  • This is not an archive. The jail roster is not a database of all past bookings. Access to old records requires a FOIL request through the County Clerk's office.
  • Data entry errors. Sometimes the name or date of birth is entered incorrectly, complicating the search.

If you need information about a person who has already been released, contact the Sheriff's Office in writing or in person. To check criminal history at the state level, use the resources of the NY Division of Criminal Justice Services.
